Belmont University’s Leu Gallery is currently hosting an exhibition of new paintings by James Kuol Makuac. Makuac came to Nashville after emigrating to the U.S. from Sudan in 2001 — he was one of the 36,000 so-called Lost Boys who were displaced by that country’s civil war. Though Makuac was a tailor and a carpenter back in Africa, he discovered a talent for painting after he settled in the city and began to search for a way to communicate the horror, sadness, joy and redemption he experienced on his long road to his new life as yet another talented neighbor we share in our local creative community.
